Democracy, Not Democracy

This little article of mine is aimed towards those hardcore, hardnosed, far-right Trump supporters who are perfectly fine accusing the Democrats of corruption while ignoring Trumps web of deceit.

I saw this tweet the other day and it made me grunt in annoyance:
Let's clear some things up about why that caption is completely wrong (and ignorant).

How about we begin the lesson which the definition of Democracy:
  • Democracy (noun): a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
Now, lets look at the definition of a Constitutional Republic:
  • Constitutional Republic: a state where the officials are elected as representatives of the people, and must govern according to existing constitutional law that limits the government's power over citizens.
Read both definitions slowly and carefully so you can spot the similarities between the two definitions.  Lets look at the following parts of each definition that are the same:
  • Democracy: "all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
  • Constitutional Republic: "a state where the officials are elected as representatives of the people..."
Right, so what part does this segment of voters not understand that a Constitutional Republic is a Democracy? We have a representative democracy which means we elect officials to work on behalf of the people and not for themselves.  If America was a true democracy, a direct democracy, then we wouldn't have an electoral college and instead would be constantly receiving legislation to read and vote on.

Before I continue, I want to point out a BIG thing I am ignoring: the quote is fake.  If you look at the quote in the tweet, it is credited to Thomas Jefferson. According to The Thomas Jefferson Foundation
  • We currently have no evidence to confirm that Thomas Jefferson ever said or wrote, "Democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where 51% of the people may take away the rights of the other 49%" or any of its listed variations.  We do not know the source of this statement's attribution to Thomas Jefferson.
The primary purpose of the fake Jefferson quote is to bring comfort to Trump voters because they were able to elect him into office without having the majority of votes.  The secondary purpose though, is more concerning: it is to let those who did not vote for Trump show that they are perfectly fine not having a democracy.  They are fine with letting closed door legislation happen, to keep press briefings away from public viewing, and to be perfectly okay with a President actively behaving like a cyberbully.  As long as the "snowflakes" are being agitated then everything is right in the world.  In an ever more transparent world, they want one side to be completely exposed while keeping theirs in the dark.  If this keeps happening then that fake quote becomes a Trump supporters dream... a totalitarian dream.
